The HP TouchSmart TM2 is a convertible 12.1″ tablet notebook from HP and word on the streets is that it is now standing in line for a processor upgrade. The upgrade is to include newer Intel chips in the form of Core i5 and Core i7. Now even though nothing’s is official about this deal, there’s no reason to think that this cannot happen. It is a perfectly suitable upgrade and it would definitely keep the line competitive and kicking.

There’s also the fact that Intel is supposed to be releasing new Core i5 ULV processors around the same time, which is some time in June this year. It is not very wise to think that the model that ow has Core 2 Duo ULV chips will be upgraded with non-ULV chips. So now that everything is coming together let’s hope for the best because it will definitely increase the amount of choice that we have in this segment.

In the mean time, it is not like HP has nothing else going on. With the Palm acquisition still sitting fresh and them still working on Windows 7 tablets, HP is surely having a busy time in the labs. HP hasn’t really been making all that noise in the PC segment where competitors like Apple, Asus, Dell and Lenovo are picking up all the pieces.

HP’s main business still remains to the printer business it seems, where it is definitely the best choice for consumers and even businesses. It’s line of ultraportables, laptops, desktops and all-in-ones are pretty stylish and powerful but it seems like HP is always missing something that makes their line ups complete. I for one have always felt that HP’s computers are over priced and for needless decorations, not tangible hardware features.

HP’s tablet has also failed to make much of an impact on the market. Other under development tablets like the Dell Mini 5 has gotten more attention than anything that HP has come up with. The revelation that they are making both a Windows 7 tablet and an Android tablet has made many a tech journo laugh and it will at best confuse the buyer. So yes, HP is not in an enviable position right now.

However, if things go well, HP could well be on its way towards becoming a major force in the mobile industry. I am of course talking about Palm and the WebOS. HP is bound to invest in it to make it their own so that it becomes the one thing that will let them make their mark on the mobile industry.

In the meantime, the convertible notebooks are fast losing their meaning in the market. They were the first ever truly usable tablets and even though they were the mainstays of designers and engineers, they were the first ones in. Now that multiple true tablets are coming out right and left, there is just no way these would have the same market value. So it is questionable as to exactly who needs a mid level consumer-grade convertible like the TouchSmart Tm2.
